Let’s make that, best harvest time.
In truth, we start harvesting as soon as the buses arrive at the end of June. The farm is designed to provide us with fresh fruit and vegetables to enjoy every day of camp and for post-camp programs like Get Your Feet Wet, Family Camping Weekend, Rosh Hashanah, and Sukkot.
But, there are certain times during the summer and fall when the harvest is particularly bountiful. The first of these miracles happens the 2nd and 3rd weeks of August. During this period, we are simultaneously picking cucumbers, squash, zucchini, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, okra, radishes, lettuce, chard, corn, mint, basil, and our second crop of strawberries. It’s really an exciting time for the kids who do all the picking (and eating).
For Get Your Feet Wet and Family Camping, it’s much the same. We just keep on picking all that we have plus a bunch of our sweet corn which we never have to cook.
However, one of the most exciting harvests of the year occurs on Rosh Hashanah (Monday, October 3rd) when Rabbi Claire, the Suchows, and, this year, our new Executive Director, Bradley Solmsen, will begin the day with an amazingly beautiful service, followed in the afternoon by farm events that include seed harvesting for next year, veggie picking of the many things that are still growing, and, of course, our world famous SLC pickled vegetables and eggplant salads.
That said, I must confess that my favorite day of the entire farming season is Sukkot (Sunday, October 9th) when we plant fall bulbs and harvest all of the aforementioned, along with snow peas, green beans, potatoes, our beautiful flowers, and whatever else is left–all of which goes home in large bags for every attending family to enjoy.
At that point, the farm will be done for 2016. Ivy and I will clean it up, do some composting, put it all to bed for the winter, and have our own celebration, knowing we will be back to do it all over again in just six months. (How great is that?)
