Today at Surprise Lake Camp we continued the observance of Tisha B’Av, a day of remembrance in which we reflected on the history and tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people. We took a break from our usual high energy activities, and instead got in touch with our inner zen. Author Betsy Thomson and alumna Joanie Vogel introduced our campers to meditation and yoga as every group in camp had a turn to participate in these activities under the shady trees of SLC.
Like in Jewish history, we moved from destruction to renewal, and from tragedy to triumph. Once the sun set, our Highlands and Frontier campers enjoyed a luau social on the Mainside Beach… we can hear the music from the office!
Additionally this evening, Merrylane and Journey’s Way, Timberline and Mountainview Girls, and Sherwood and Mountainview Boys participated in Big Brother/Big Sister programs. Our older campers got a chance to see what it is like to work with younger ones, and our younger campers can look forward to one day being a teen camper.
